DAN NARKOSIS ABJECT TERROR REVIEW ALBUM ELEKTRO VOX

'Reincarnate' has shown me the importance of music that really makes you think and connect with yourself both lyrically, and in the sensation you experience as you listen. IAMIMPERFECT invite you to take a voyage in to your own mind, memories, and emotions (With some VERY impressive music!)

Sheffield based - UK dark electro band, IAMIMPERFECT has just unveiled their first EP, Reincarnate.

The lyrical themes in Reincarnate deal with addiction, insecurity, depression, anxiety, fear and eventually, the realization that change must happen for growth to restart anew. Without reaching the darkness, we'll never know the light.

The EP also represents a reincarnation of a musical identity, sound, image and even genre, to be something better than what was there before. Reincarnate presents a unique blend Darkwave, Synthpop, Industrial and Goth genres, with the music driven by complex synth arrangements, electronic drums, loud distorted guitar and soaring vocal hooks and harmonies. The long anticipated debut EP is here! Featuring new revamped mixes of the singles Static & Feeling and Inside Of Me, and new songs Casting Shadows and Start Again.

Released October 5, 2024

Paul Jackson - Vocals, Synths, Programming

Kelly Dorset - Guitar

Review

'Static & Feeling' starts with some wonderful synth keys bringing that lovely retro feel that only alternative electronic can subtly achieve, this is then complimented by some simple yet euphoric drums! A song of addiction and the conflicted feeling between the amazing highs, and the depression lows. An important subject to sing about. This is one of those songs where the melody and vocals sound upbeat and happy but once you listen closely.. you realise just like the conflict of substance use.. is the conflicting lyrics to the party like musical vibe. (Much like 'Pumped up kicks') Quite a catchy track to get you swaying to softly in a bar, there seems to be a fair bit of substance within this track to enjoy when hearing it multiple times over. 'Inside Of Me' reminds me a little bit of a new discovery for me - the band Zetra. Paul uses quite forlorn, beautiful melody in his voice that is empowered by the backing track to an almost fantasy epic feel - Yet of course, far more modern with it's synthpop electronics. When the track slows down to a lone synth, Paul whispers his lyrics around the 3:00 mark that REALLY remind me of Mind.In.A.Box.. Follow this up with some fantastic electro riffs and you've got a banger! I am very impressed with how well the keyboard and guitar empower one another. This then changes again to somewhat of an early 2000s Indie pop style. Needless to say, this is another track worth listening to multiple times that most people should find enjoyment in regardless of their usual taste! 'Casting Shadows' - Sweeping guitars lay out the scene for another very personal track, these guitars power out a steady bass like riff that gives the track a great foundation allowing for the melodic lyrics to wash over you in contrast to the heavy riff. chef's kiss. The soft yet weighted lyrics and the underpinning greatness of the electronics are like that of HEALTH.. Therefore brilliant.

I'm a witness to all my failures.. The voices beckon and drag me down, where I'll spend my days..

'Start Again' starts soft and quietly, building up with some brilliant synths then giving way to the first verse. This one is quite emotional and reads like a letter. Melancholic, and soothing.. The melody is then picked up a jolt of power with some of the most interesting synths I've heard in a long time that sadly don't last long. Around about the 4:40 mark we are treated to more great synths that again touch on that Mind.In.A.Box feel. Clearly a track that means a lot to the band, this is a really nice piece to play the EP out and leave you feeling calm and satisfied, like gazing out of a high window as the sun breaks through an ending storm.

Conclusion

IAMIMPERFECT have crafted quite the piece of synth-magic with 'Reincarnate'. The EP feels full of soul, passion, care, complexity, talent, and a fine selection all round of musical flavours that anyone could enjoy. With poignant lyrics, kick ass instrumentation, and a general feeling of self discovery, you'll come away from 'Reincarnate' with a sense of deeply satisfied contemplation and peace.
